Wow it's been a year since I updated this...   Sorry about that.
Starting where I ended the last update, we made it to GrayRock and had a blast...  Smokie did well but we noticed a few things that weren't right.   First off the right side front wheel wasn't pulling.    With a Detroit up front it should be..   Anyway we noticed it in the Canyon and when we got back to camp we fixed it..   Another thing was that the steering wasn't up to snuff and we had an over heating problem.   But despite those set backs we still had a lot of fun..  So what have a done to her since I last updated this...
  • Front and rear axles installed with 5:13s and Detroits.
  • Rear axles are 31 spline Yukons and the front are Warn with CTM u-joints.
  • Saginaw power steering pump installed
  • Kool Flow water pump.
  • Stone Crusher radius arm extensions installed.
  • Added hydro assist to help steering the 37 inch Boggers.
  • Pertronix II ignition module and coil installed.
  • Added a WildHorses adjustable track bar.
  • Built my own tie-rod and drag link out of DOM tubing and with 1 ton Chevy tie-rod ends.
  • Upgraded the Dana 44 cover to a Heavy duty one.
  • Installed a 4 turn power steering box and had it rebuilt and tapped for hydro-assist from West Texas Offroad.
Smokie Smokin..

My Little Lady

What I still need to do
  • F-250 shock mounts
  • Hydro-Boost
  • Fix a few leakes.
  • Install rear pinion guard.
  • 2 1/2 body lift.
I brought home a couple of new Broncos which will be getting their own blogs.  One is a 76 aka Spirit and the other is a 73 Ranger aka Gramps.  Also I have most of the parts needed for my next project, a pure trail rig.   I am naming it after my character I played for our Churches VBS, Rowdy..

Update on Joe..  Instead of fixing up my parts Bronco Joe decided to rescue another Bronco.  I was on my way to buy it on a snowy day last winter.   The trip was a great adventure in itself.  We retrieved it from a snow covered mountain outside of Nashville in my 2 wheel drive Suburban.  To get to the point I need a 4x4 tow rig.  Anyway I was buying it for parts but Joe fell in love with it and wanted it for his own.  You can read his blog here..

Gotta get ready for the Bama Brawl at Grayrock on March 23rd.  The rate I am moving I will be lucky to make it.  The rearend is under the Bronco but I haven't finished welding the shock mounts on the axle, I had to move them slightly to clear the disk brake calipers.  I also think in I need to make a couple of spacers to push the caliper mounts out a lttle more for additional clearance.   The Front end is out and I am getting ready to stick the new one under the Bronco.  Just need to finish welding the track bar riser, put the hubs and rotors on, install the new calipers and install the new brake lines.  While the front axle is out I plan to pull the oil pan yet again and see if I can get an oil leak stopped once and for all.

Still has to be done before Grayrock
  • Finish rear axle
  • Finish front axle
  • Install F250 shock mounts
  • Get driveshafts lengthened
  • Install steering - Would like to install the Stone Crusher steering system
What I would like to get done before Greyrock
  • Install Saginaw Powersteering pump
  • Install Hydro-boost
  • Install the Pertronix II module in the distributor

Man it's been too long since I last posted.  I have carried the Bronco out a few times and man it's a blast..  But I can't leave well enough alone though now I am in the process of  upgrading the axles.  I installed the detroit locker in ford nine inch and installed disk brakes and now we are waiting on a delivery from the BroncoGraveyard for new U bolts.   We have also installed the 5 1/2 in leafs in the back.  I am also getting the front end ready to go under the Bronco.  Once the rear is installed I will pull the existing Dana 44 out and slide the new one in.   I am installing a Wildhorses track bar riser on the axle also.  Plus I am going to order a Stone Crusher steering system as soon I as get the new Dana 44 under the Bronco and take some measurements.  At the same time I will be installing 5 1/2 coils from Cage, F-250 shock mounts, and radius arm extentsions from Stone Crusher.  I had my wheels sand blasted and my beadlocks installed.  I am currently in the process of mounting my Boggers on them.

My good friend Joe is wanting to bring my parts Bronco back to life for him to drive.  He is going to be using the axles out of my Bronco and the Buckshots I am currently running.    I don't think Joe knows what He's getting into.  It's going to be alot of work and Broncos are a serious money pit.

Headlights are working.  It was a bad dimmer switch, thanks Rodgers.   Took the Bronco out for a spin in the mud this past weekend and she did pretty good.  I still have a flat spot on acceleration and at the end it had what I believe to be either vapor lock or perculation in the carb.  But all in all she ran pretty good.  Check out the pictures and video in the Gallery.

Ok finally the brakes are fixed. No it hasn't taken me a month to complete, just alot of other things have been taking up my time. My oldest daughter's volleyball, vacation and finally getting notice that I will be laid off in a few weeks. Oh well back to the Bronco.
To fix the brakes I replaced the line running from the proportioning valve in the front to the rear flex line. I then noticed another leak but that was fixed by just tightening the connection. I fixed the tow hooks on the front and put all the lights back in place. I am having some problems getting the headlights and front parking lights to work. I have installed the seats and seat belts. The CB is installed, so once I get the lights working or maybe before, we are ready for a test drive. Just have to make sure we are home before dark.

I hopefully fixed my leaking brake line over the weekend.   Basically I upgraded my flaring tool and re-did the flare.  Also important to remember, always install the fitting before you flare the end,  don't ask me how I know.   On Saturday my good friends Joe and Walter came over and we finished mounting the front bumper, except for the fact that I put the tow hooks on top of the bumper instead of the bottom.   We also began mounting the cage.  We had the rear mounted and was starting to work on the other mounts before we had to call it a night.

I installed my Tuffy glove box last night. This wasn't exactly urgent but I realized I needed to do this before I mounted the cage. Also I believe the reason the Bronco was running rough was due to the choke. Right now the power for my electric choke runs straight off the battery, I need to run if off the ignition switch. It was real fun man handling the cage by myself in order to install the glove box.

Alot has taken place over the last month, but not near enough. I installed the power brake booster and master cylinder. I had to run new brake lines and that was alot of fun. I still have one that is leaking pretty bad so I just bought a new RIGID brand flaring tool that will hopefully be better than the cheap Harbor Freight one I have been using. I have my rear bumper install along with a Hi-Jack mounted to it. I also managed to get the front bumper mounted, after some minor trimming on the frame. I still need to bolt it on though and then mount the winch. On Labor day I had a couple of great friends, Joe and Walter, come over and they helped me put the cage in. They also cut the backing plates for the cage feet, pressed in the studs for the lug nuts on my new Yukon axles and helped track down and fix my leaky brake lines.

What's next? Well the engine wasn't running too good, but I think that's a choke issue. I need to get my Tuffy glove box in before I can mount the cage. I need to line up and drill out a couple of the mounting holes for the front bumper. Finish mounting the cage and fix the final, I hope, brake line leak.

I also acquired all the parts for my C02 tank. So now I have a complete C02 tank for about $100.

August 2nd 2006

Ok I have just started this blog but I have been working on my main Bronco, 74,  for last year and 1/2.  I have owned this Bronco since 1982 when I was 15.   I drove it for a few years then I lost interest when I started college, as I needed something more reliable to drive.  I started working on restoring it over 10 years ago, but then my first child was born so on the back burner it went yet again.  So now when my youngest was 3 I got back into it, I think partially because my Dad was terminally ill and we had alot of great memories together riding it and working on the Bronco.

Ok so where am I on my 74?  Well I started out with this idea of restoring it and I acummulated all kinds of parts off of Ebay and from members of ClassicBroncos.com.  Then I decided to make it into a trail machine and bought more parts..  Well now I am going to build it into a street/trail machine with a heavy emphasis on Trail..   Here is my list of parts I have laying around that need to be installed

  • Front and rear prerunner bumpers
  • Milemarker 12000lb winch
  • Full Cage
  • Bikini Top
  • Seats - Front, rear and I have a middle seat for the front.
  • Front Dana 44 with F150 disks, warn axle shafts, CTM u-joints and a detroit locker
  • Rear Ford big bearing 9 inch.  Install Dertroit locker, Yukon 31 spline axle shafts and disk brakes
  • Power disk brakes
  • 5 1/2 in Cage coils in Front.
  • 5 1/2 inch National leafs in the back - On there way soon from a member of ClassicBroncos.com
  • I have alot more parts laying around but these are the ones that I need to install before I can wheel it
